TOPIC: Efficiencies in design and construction, from an owner’s perspective

NOTES: What can the owner, designer, program manager and contractor do to make the development program more efficient in order to overcome their challenges.  Mr. Hensley will also discuss expansion and infrastructure improvements at Phoenix area airports, with emphasis on the redevelopment of the West Terminal and construction of the Automated People Mover (APM) at Sky Harbor International Airport.

TOPIC:Arizona State University Capital Programs

SPEAKER: Mr. Bruce Jensen
COMPANY:Capital Programs Management Group for Arizona State University

NOTES: Bruce is responsible for the Capital Improvement and Capital Development programs as well as all capital construction projects and programs.  Prior to working at ASU, Bruce worked at Maricopa County as a consultant, worked for Intel Corporation, Texas Instruments and owned his own business.  Bruce has been in the facilities and construction business for over twenty three years.  Raised in Flagstaff, Arizona, Bruce is one of those rare native Arizonan’s.  He is married and has one grown male child.  Bruce served in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Civil Engineering Corps Reserve.  He obtained his Baccalaureate degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 and obtained his AZ P.E. in 1988.

TOPIC: The Performance Information Risk Management System (PIRMS)

SPEAKER: Dean T. Kashiwagi, PhD, PE

NOTES: Dr. Kashiwagi will introduce innovative value-base concepts and strategies in the delivery of design, construction, maintenance, and other professional services based on alignment, preplanning, transfer of risk and control to contractors, and the minimization of unnecessary transactions. The result: Contractors and vendors make more profit, clients pay less, and everyone is happy.  Beginning with the introduction of PIRMS in 1994, Dr. Kashiwagi’s “hands off” approach to managing vendors has enjoyed a 98% success rate in construction and non-construction projects valued at $1.135 billion.

TOPIC: Insulock

SPEAKER: Mr. Joel Borovay, Chief Executive Officer
COMPANY: American Insulock, Inc.

NOTES: Insulock is a designer, developer, and marketer of polyurethane blocks for commercial and residential construction applications. The innovative technology of the block is designed to replace cast masonry blocks (“CMU”). The Inuslock block is classified as a green building material because it is sustainable, energy efficient, eco-friendly, and reduces carbon emissions. There is substantial opportunity for further innovation and R&D with recyclable materials, product line extensions and product enhancements. Insulock blocks reduce project building costs by approximately 30% while promoting environmental responsibility.

TOPIC:Maricopa Community College District Capital Programs

SPEAKER: Mr. Arlen Solochek, AIA
COMPANY:Maricopa Community College District

NOITES: First of three “Maricopa County” topics.  The Maricopa Community College District encompasses over four million square feet of facilities at eleven main campuses and covering a geographic area of more than 9,200 square miles.   Mr. Solocheck will present an overview of MCCD Facilities Planning and Development program including current and planned capital projects, discuss the impact of economic changes to capital projects, and provide insight on how the Facilities Planning and Development department works with general contractors and subcontractors.  Mr. Solochek is a registered architect in Arizona, A.I.A. member, and a graduate of Arizona State University with Bachelor of Architecture and Masters of Business Administration degrees. He has led his department and project teams to many major awards, including the Arizona chapter of The American Institute of Architect’s 1999 Client of the Year award for Maricopa; American School and University Magazine’s 2000 Architectural Portfolio Louis I. Kahn Citation for Best Post Secondary Education Project; the State of Arizona 1998  Governor’s Award for Energy Conservation- 1st Place for Maricopa’s Energy Conservation Program, and multiple Valley Forward, State and Regional A.I.A design excellence awards.

TOPIC:Maricopa County Library District Plan of Service

SPEAKER: Mr. Jim Govern, Branch Development Coordinator for the Maricopa County Library District.

Notes: Second of three “Maricopa County” topics.  Mr. Govern will discuss the Maricopa County Library District’s Plan of Service, current building projects, and the future development of branch library projects.  Mr. Govern serves as the in-house manager for new building projects as well as having responsibilities for renovations and remodels.  Most of his professional library career has been in the areas of operations management and administration.  He has been in his current position with the Library District since 2006.

SPEAKER: Mr. Kenny W. Harris, P.E. Maricopa County Assistant County Manager of Public Works and County Engineer

Notes: Third of three “Maricopa County” topics. Mr. Harris will talk about the new Court Tower and the importance of quality cost estimating on the project.  As Assistant County Manager of Public Works Mr. Harris oversees four separate agencies: Flood Control District of Maricopa County, Facilities Management, the Maricopa County Department of Transportation and Solid Waste Management.

Topic: Preparing Proposal Request for Quality Control Testing and Inspections on Large Projects

Speaker: Mr. Bryan Castles
Company:  Western Technologies, Inc.

Notes: Bryan has extensive experience with construction quality control methods and procedures and has provided quality control management and administrative services for numerous DOT, Corps of Engineers, and FAA projects. He has experience in all aspects of aggregate production, concrete batching, and concrete construction. Bryan is an active member of the ACI and Past President of the Arizona Chapter. He currently serves as a voting member of ACI 211 - Proportioning Concrete Mixtures, ACI 214 - Evaluation of Results of Tests Used to Determine the Strength of Concrete, and ACI  E702 Designing Concrete Structures.
